Evaluation Q1 write up and recording link

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My chosen genre has been represented through the theme of death, insanity, mental delusion and the character of jay/jade who has an alter ego of a woman to commit his crimes. This is the psychological aspect of our film. An example of where this has also been used is the film ‘Psycho’ by Alfred Hitchcock. I chose to analyse the psychological horror films the woman in black and the sixth sense as well as the horror film scream. I found many typical conventions and the ones we follow in our opening sequence that we have developed are gentle diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in the equilibrium, where the diegetic sound is often distorted to increase the scare factor within the audience. This is shown at the beginning of our production and when the villain is running out of the park, this is a diegetic sound of the footsteps. During the disequilibrium there are lots of fast paced shots and sounds that complements the action on the screen, for example when the title of our film comes up whilst the villain is running back out the park the music gets louder to portray his lethality.

There is a vulnerable character and a villain, we also include a fade to black to create suspense creating an enigma that keeps the audience guessing and the binary oppositions between the two characters. We challenged conventions of a typical psychological horror by using bright lighting where as in other films they may use low key and gloomy lighting to show the binary oppositions theory by Claude Levi-Strauss. We have used the convention of using slow paced shots until the real drama happens where we have then put some fast paced shots in. This creates tension between the film and the audience. Moreover our villain is dressed in all dark colours as this connotes they are evil, similarly lighter colours are used for the victims to portray their innocence and purity. The difference in colours also make it clear to the audience the binary opposites which is a convention in horror films for example scream. We also followed the convention that is frequently used in the film ‘Psycho’, of using low angle camera shots to show the strength of the villain and the vulnerability of the victim, however we have also challenged this as it changes so the victim is shown to be less vulnerable as she fights back. This is Stuart Halls reception theory as it makes the audience feel vulnerable because they are on the side of the victim. A film that used this convention is The Woman in Black.
We carried out our research through questionnaires that consisted of questions to help us decide what an audience would rather see in a psychological horror. For example the results of the questionnaire showed that people liked seeing close up shots in psychological horrors, we therefore used this in our production. Also the questionnaire showed that people would prefer to see the murder take place in somewhere like a forest as it makes it more tense. We also took this onboard and filmed in a woodland area which also follows a convention In many horror films as it is a dark isolated place where no one is around to help, an example where this was used is the house at the end of the street.

We used light lighting to portray how the character is in a dream so it's not suppose to be normal this also shows the distortion of the film, how everything is not what it seems. I found that opening sequences in horrors don't give too much away and they show this by not using any dialogue in the opening sequence, an example of where this was used in is the woman in black. We followed this convention and didn't use any dialogue as it helps build the suspense of the enigma and what might happen through the use of the music which is what we have done.
Our production has used Todorov’s narrative theory through the use of propps 8 stock character roles. For example the villain is jay/jade who is the mystery murderer of the teenage girl and the protagonist Lauren portrays the hero of the film as she solves the murder. Furthermore the idea that most narratives start with an equilibrium is a convention we have not followed as the production starts of with Lauren finding the dead body, therefore a disequilibrium, which is the Laura Mulvey female gaze theory. This would then be followed by an enigma as the audience try to solve who the mystery murderer is. This is uses and gratification theory through social interaction as the audience are solving the mystery. The equilibrium would happen at the end of the film when the mystery has been solved and the protagonist is safe from harm.
